The difficulties of suffering from acne should never be underestimated. The problem can affect the whole of a person’s life, in some cases causing a loss of self-confidence so extreme that the affected person may not wish to leave their home – leading to anxiety and depression.
Concealment and treatment at the same time
At Bellissima Exclusive we understand it is important not only to treat the acne but also to conceal the problem until it has been fully addressed, so that the client can carry on with their life during the treatment. We know that many acne sufferers will not want to come to or leave the salon without make-up. We will remove any make-up prior to treatment and apply our CoffeeBerry® mineral treatment foundation before you leave. CoffeeBerry® Mineral Foundation is clinically proven to repair and heal the skin so will only enhance the treatment.
In-depth consultation to find the most appropriate acne treatment
Acne is a very complex skin condition. Every sufferer will need an in-depth consultation to establish the severity of the acne present and the most suitable treatment programme. There is a no quick fix with any acne condition, but we can control and elevate symptoms to make living with acne much more bearable.
Scarring and changes in pigmentation are always a worry for pre- and post-acne sufferers. This is always considered within your treatment plan and skin damage can be prevented and reversed with careful planning.
There are many different types of acne, including:
- Acne Vulgaris – this is most common form of acne with no conclusive evidence on the cause.
- Acne Excoriee – usually found in women with mild acne. This is caused by compulsive picking and squeezing. Most commonly occurring in people in their 20s.
- Acne Fulminans – this is a rare cystic acne in men, which can be very uncomfortable due to the swelling and throbbing of the acne.
- Acne Conglobata – this is a cystic acne sometimes present in conjunction with other inflammatory disorders. It is thought to be a genetic condition.
- Acne Mechanica – this is irritation of our facial hair gland and can be very pustular.
- Drug-Induced Acne – this is caused by medication such as the contraceptive pill or steroid-based medications.
- Occupational Acne – these breakouts can be caused from work and reactions to working conditions.
Acne can be graded for its severity
Grade I acne is the mildest form. There may be minor pimples but they will be small, appear only very occasionally, and in small numbers (one or two). Blackheads and milia will be found, sometimes in great numbers, but there is no inflammation of Grade I acne.
Grade I acne is commonly seen in early adolescence, especially in the nose and/or forehead. Many adults also experience grade I acne, in the form of blackheads on the nose and forehead. Milia are commonly found in the eye area and chin.
This type of acne can be successfully treated at home using our PRIORI® product range containing salicylic acid, lactic or Vit C and in-salon treatments. Results generally are seen quickly. Treating acne while it is still in its early stages helps prevent the condition from progressing, especially in teens. Grade I acne may progress to Grade II if left untreated.
Grade II is considered moderate acne. There will be blackheads and milia, generally in greater numbers. You will start seeing more papules and the formation of pustules in this stage. They will appear with greater frequency, and general breakout activity will be more obvious. Slight inflammation of the skin is now apparent.
In teens, you may see the acne progress from the nose and forehead to other areas of the face. Acne may start to affect the chest and shoulders, with occasional breakouts on the back, especially in males. Adult women may find greater breakout activity in the cheeks, chin, and jaw line area, especially just before and during the menstrual cycle.
Grade II acne can be treated at home. Our PRIORI® products, containing salicylic/lactic acid, should be used daily to help kill the bacteria that cause inflamed breakouts. We recommend in-salon treatments including skin peels to control and treat the skin. Grade II acne may progress to Grade III, especially if pimples are habitually picked at or squeezed.
This type of acne is considered severe. The main difference between Grade II acne and Grade III is the amount of inflammation present. The skin is now obviously reddened and inflamed. Papules and pustules have developed in greater numbers, andnodules will be present.
Grade III usually involves other body areas, such as the neck, chest, shoulders, and/or upper back, as well as the face. The chance of scarring becomes higher as the infection spreads and becomes deeper.
We can treat this condition with PRIORI® topical and systemic therapies available only by prescription. Left untreated, Grade III acne may progress to Grade IV.
The most serious form of acne, Grade IV is often referred to as nodulocystic or cystic acne. The skin will display numerous papules, pustules, and nodules, in addition to cysts. There is a pronounced amount of inflammation and breakouts are severe. Cystic acne is very painful.
Acne of this severity usually extends beyond the face, and may affect the entire back, chest, shoulders, and upper arms. The infection is deep and widespread. Nearly all cystic acne sufferers develop scarring.
Grade IV acne must be treated by a dermatologist. It tends to be hard to control, and almost always requires powerful systemic medications in addition to topical treatments.

IPL Acne Treatment
IPL acne treatment is an effective light-based therapy which is now revolutionising the treatment of acne. IPL Acne therapy destroys the most common bacteria that cause the condition — without drugs or downtime.
The light emitted from the intense pulsed light system directly targets overactive sebaceous glands, greatly reducing the total number and severity of active lesions, and lessening the inflammation and occurrence of breakouts. The light stimulates the production of new collagen to improve skin texture, and can also reduce the appearance of acne. Almost everyone can be treated, apart from dark skinned or tanned clients or clients who may be pregnant or are taking Roaccutane®.
Immediately after treatment the skin may appear red and a warm tingling sensation may be felt. Typically the skin is cooled to ease any discomfort and a calming gel is applied.
Making sure you’re suitable for IPL acne treatment
To check your suitability for treatment, a consultation and patch test is needed and you will be asked to sign a consent form. We recommend treatment once or twice a fortnight over a course of 6 or 12 appointments, depending on the severity of the acne. This treatment works particularly well when combined with one of our skin peels.
One of our skin specialists will advise you on the best option for your individual case.

Acne can strike at any time from adolescence to adulthood. It can be triggered by an array of factors, including hormonal imbalance, environmental conditions or stress.
There are many myths about the causes of acne. Chocolate, greasy foods and dirty skin are often blamed. There is no medical evidence that suggests this. However, maintaining a healthy diet will always help you to keep your skin healthy.
There is no known cure for acne but it can be controlled. Eventually some forms of the condition just disappear without explanation.
If your acne is active, avoid abrasive treatments such as microdermabrasion, Rejuvapen and facial scrubs as these can make the acne worse and spread the infection.
Always keep your skin clean, avoid oil-based skincare, do not pick or squeeze – this can cause scarring – and visit a reputable skin clinic for professional advice on homecare and treatments.
