Unwanted hair can be embarrassing and cause distress – especially if it’s on the facial area. Bellissima Exclusive in Guiseley can help you to gain fresh confidence by providing a safe, permanent solution to this commonly encountered problem.

How Electrolysis works to remove unwanted hair

Electrolysis can be used to treat any small area where unwanted hair is present. All hair and skin types are equally suitable for treatment. The technique involves guiding a very fine needle into the hair shaft and applying a small electrical current. Most people describe this treatment as mildly uncomfortable.

Electrolysis hair removal causes a heat reaction which damages the hair follicle. Carried out over multiple sessions, the treatment will slow down and weaken the hair growth – eventually leading to permanent removal.

Before you start your course of electrolysis, the hair needs to be long enough to be grasped by a pair of tweezers. This is because each hair will slide out of its follicle once it has been treated.  A consultation is required at your first treatment.  There are a few medical conditions which would prevent you from having electrolysis, including epilepsy and heart conditions. Don’t worry – all this will be covered in your consultation.

Catching every hair in its growing cycle

Unlike laser hair removal, it isn’t possible to know in advance how many electrolysis treatments you may need. The reason is that we have to treat the hair in its growing cycle to kill the follicle. Because we can’t see beneath the surface it’s necessary to keep on treating the hairs until we catch all of them at the growing stage.  However, every time we treat the hair it will grow back finer and fairer and the growth will slow down.

The length of your course of treatment will also depend on hair type and density. You would normally start with one treatment per week, but the time between appointments may well increase as the electrolysis slows down hair growth.

After your Electrolysis treatments

After each treatment your skin may appear pink and can sometimes become slightly raised around the follicle. This normally reduces after a few treatments as your skin becomes used to the current.

Following hair removal treatment we recommend that you avoid make-up, skincare products and swimming for 24 hours.  It is imperative that you do not pluck, wax or thread the hair between treatments, as this will bring a rush of blood to the follicle feeding the hair and stop the process from working.

Making things easier for you

We understand that growing the hair can be very difficult and embarrassing, but there are ways to reduce the prominence of unwanted hair until it is ready for removal.  Many of our clients find it helpful to cut the hair very close to the skin using a sharp pair of nail scissors. You could also apply gentle facial bleach to lighten dark hairs.

Remember, we are always here to help and support you through your treatment and assure you it will be worth it in the end!
