Why do Facial Red Veins Appear?

Red, broken veins are a commonly encountered problem. Sometimes called Thread Veins or Red Thread Veins, they can be distressing, especially when they appear on the face.

Facial Red Veins can have a number of causes, from sun damage and the environment to hormonal changes. Using excessively harsh products on the skin can also be a factor. Equally, a tendency to develop Red Thread Veins may simply be an unfortunate genetic inheritance!

Red veins most commonly appear on the face, body and legs. They are not, as is sometimes supposed, broken capillaries, but rather capillaries which have become permanently dilated. The capillaries have very thin walls which constantly dilate and constrict. As we age, these vessels lose their elasticity, so they can become permanently dilated and visible to the naked eye.

Treatments using Advanced Electrolysis at our Yorkshire clinic

Here at Bellissima Exclusive in Leeds we offer two different methods of Electrolysis, so we can find a technique to suit each individual client. Your therapist will advise you which method will be best suited to you. The choice is between Blend (so called because it combines galvanic current with thermolysis) or Thermolysis Treatment. The more specialised Blend Method offers a quicker healing time and some success with the minor Red Thread Veins in the legs.

Thermolysis Treatment for Thread and Facial Red Veins

The first Facial Red Vein Removal method, Thermolysis, involves the application of a small electrolysis current to the skin surface. Your Bellissima Exclusive therapist will do this by tapping a very fine needle along the affected area. The blood vessel is then cauterised and destroyed by heat. The best results are usually seen on the nose and cheek area.

The treatment takes approximately 30 minutes, depending on the size of the area concerned. It isn’t anything to worry about: most clients describe it as no more than mildly uncomfortable, with a slight stinging sensation often noticeable in the area being treated.

After treatment you’ll notice that your skin has become slightly blanched and the red colour disappears entirely as the blood which caused it is reabsorbed. The area may feel warm for a short period following treatment. Over the following 7 to 10 days small crusts may appear on the area treated. These are sometimes described as looking like cat scratches! Don’t be concerned – they will soon be gone.

The Blend Method – Galvanic and Thermolysis Treatment for Thread and Facial Red Veins

The second method offered combines a Galvanic current and Thermolysis. You may not be familiar with the term ‘Galvanic’ – this involves the insertion of a thin needle to deliver a low electrical charge. The electricity passing down the needle causes the salt and water in the surrounding skin to be chemically altered, producing a small amount of sodium hydroxide.

The Blend Method combines both the Thermolysis and Galvanic procedures. Sodium hydroxide is created and is then heated by the electricity. This heat, plus the chemical solution, causes the blood to be reabsorbed by the body.

Many clients find this method more comfortable and the recovery time is decreased as there is no crusting after the treatment. The skin may appear red and slightly swollen, with a slight itchy feeling (histamine) often experienced. This method is suitable for deeper vessels and some red leg vessels.

Darker skin types and more sensitive skins also tend to respond well to this Red Vein Removal method. The treatment takes approximately 30 minutes, depending on the size of the affected area.

What results can you expect from Facial Red Vein Removal?

Typically, up to three treatments may be required to clear Thread Veins, but we’re confident that you’ll see a noticeable difference after just one. The treatments should be spaced at 4-week intervals.

Normally, fading begins to occur about three weeks after the treatment, with the finer broken veins starting to disappear. It is, however, extremely important for you to continue with your treatment until the broken veins have completely faded to achieve the best results.

Before your Facial Red Vein Removal Treatment

Before we proceed, you’ll receive a Free Consultation at our Yorkshire salon. During this consultation your therapist will conduct patch tests to make sure you’re suitable for treatment. We’ll also check your medical history so we can advise you further.

After your Facial Red Vein Removal Treatment

After your treatment, we recommend that you avoid using skincare products and make-up on the affected area. You should also take a break from the gym, avoid taking hot baths or showers, and refrain from any other heat treatments for 24 hours. It’s really important to use a factor 30 SPF continuously after Thread Vein Removal.
