Everyone has a unique perception of pain and associated coping strategies. At Yorkshire Aesthetics, we want our patients to feel as relaxed and as comfortable as possible, by offering a range of pain management options.
We provide the option of local anaesthetic cream to numb the surface of the skin for all treatments and a range of dermal fillers with integrated local anaesthetic in the product. One of our nurse practitioners has undertaken specialist training to provide a dental block (local nerve infiltration) to numb the lips. By using plain 1% lidocaine without adrenaline for this procedure, the effects wear off more quickly and it avoids drooling and lack of control of the mouth afterwards.
Research has demonstrated a correlation between anxiety and pain, and that relaxation techniques can help to reduce pain. Some patients find visualisation techniques and breathing exercises helpful. The A-delta and C nerve fibres in the skin which send pain signals to the brain also transmit temperature and pressure signals, it’s therefore possible to reduce pain by applying ice or intermittent pressure during aesthetic treatments. Ice has the additional advantage of constricting blood vessels in the local area, reducing bruising and swelling.
The size of the needle or cannula used can affect how painful procedures feel. For botulinum toxin type A anti-wrinkle injections or for the treatment of migraines or hyperhidrosis (excess sweating), we use very fine insulin needles, to reduce tissue trauma and pain.
Over the past 5 years in the Aesthetics industry, there has been an increasing move towards using cannulas rather than just needles for dermal filler treatments. The advantages of using a cannula over a needle is that it is a blunt tipped, flexible wire with a hole at the side to let the product out. A needle is only used to make the initial insertion point and trajectory. The blunt tip reduces bruising by avoiding piercing blood vessels under the surface of the skin and the risk of accidental injection of dermal filler into a blood vessel. Less bruising also means less discomfort after the procedure and less down time. Interestingly, the larger the diameter of the cannula, the less painful it is and the less the risk of injury to blood vessels. At Yorkshire Aesthetics we do not make any additional charges for using a cannula.
